Gynecologic Oncology Program

Cancer can affect a woman’s reproductive and overall health in different ways. Women in San Antonio and surrounding South Texas communities trust our gynecological cancer doctors for expert guidance and a supportive care experience. Our oncofertility program offers those of childbearing age expanded options for their reproductive future.

Gynecological cancers, such as cervical, ovarian and uterine cancers, develop inside female reproductive organs. At Mays Cancer Center, home to UT Health San Antonio MD Anderson Cancer Center, we provide a full spectrum of gynecological cancer services, personalized to the ways cancer impacts you.

We offer leading cancer innovations and therapies that are uniquely provided by our cancer center.

With advanced brachytherapy technology, our radiation oncologists can deliver precise radiation doses directly to the cancer while sparing surrounding healthy tissue. Our oncofertility program offers advanced fertility-sparing surgical techniques and other therapies. This allows younger women of childbearing age to have options for future family planning.

Our experienced gynecologic surgeons lead your care, which means the same doctor performs your surgery and prescribes chemotherapy. Having one oncologist (who gets to know you and understands your needs) enables high-quality, personalized care.

Gynecological cancers we treat

Why choose us for gynecologic cancer care?

Highlights of our program include:

  • Specialized expertise: Our gynecologic surgeons have additional fellowship training in gynecologic cancer care. Other centers in South Texas refer challenging gynecologic cases to us for our experience and expertise. Learn more about cancer surgery.
  • Prompt access: Your health concerns deserve immediate attention. We make it easy to access our gynecological cancer specialists. New patients are seen within one to two weeks.
  • Leading treatments: We belong to the nationally recognized Gynecologic Oncology Group, which allows us to offer access to promising new treatments through clinical trials. Genetic testing of specific cancers gives us vital information so we can personalize your treatment.
  • Surgical skill: Gynecologic oncologists partner with surgical oncologists to treat all types of gynecologic cancers and perform complex surgeries, when needed. Our surgeons’ skill enables you to heal faster after surgery. For some women, it may preserve fertility.
  • Personal care: Our doctors are friendly and approachable, and take the time to get to know you. We discuss your treatment options in detail and encourage you to actively participate in your care. Our personalized approach has received high praise from patients, who consistently report having a positive treatment experience. Our clinic has been recognized for its commitment to patient care and the individual patient experience.
  • Support: Our unique support group, Purple Heals, connects an extensive network of individuals affected by all forms of gynecological cancer. Members share information and experiences during our monthly meetings, so you hear from cancer survivors with similar experiences.
  • Genetic testing: Genetic changes (mutations) passed down in families can increase your risk for developing ovarian or other cancers. We offer comprehensive genetic testing and counseling services. If you have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, we’ll create a personalized plan to help you identify your risk and manage your health.

Our team approach to gynecological cancers

Cancer doctors from different teams meet weekly to discuss and coordinate your care. This dialogue helps us develop a treatment plan that’s based on leading cancer research and reflects your needs and preferences.

Our gynecologic oncology team includes:

  • Gynecologic oncologists have received intensive training in how to diagnose and treat all types of gynecologic cancers.
  • Surgical oncologists partner with gynecologic oncologists to perform intricate procedures. This precision helps us address multiple issues in fewer surgeries.
  • Advanced practitioners, such as physician assistants and advanced practice nurse practitioners, support your care under our doctors’ supervision.
  • Gynecologic pathologists analyze a cancer’s molecular and genetic features to pinpoint a diagnosis and tailor your treatment plan.
  • Radiation oncologists specialize in directing powerful radiation treatments to destroy gynecologic cancer cells with less impact on healthy tissues.
  • Support professionals, such as social workers and pain management specialists, help you cope with a cancer diagnosis and connect you to helpful resources.

Research and clinical trials for gynecologic cancers

As the only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer center in Central and South Texas, we have extensive research capabilities.

Our physician-scientists participate in a large network of clinical trials that explore cutting-edge cancer innovations in gynecologic cancer care. If eligible, you may be able to try new cancer drugs or therapies that are not available elsewhere in the community.
