Refer a Patient

Mays Cancer Center, home to UT Health San Antonio MD Anderson Cancer Center, has a long history of excellence in cancer research and clinical care. Your patients are in good hands with our board-certified, fellowship-trained cancer specialists.

We understand that continuity of care is essential for patients, so we’ve designed a referral process that’s as simple and direct as possible. We communicate regularly with you to provide feedback about your patient’s visit. We also offer up-to-date information about programs and services available for patients and physicians.

Why refer your patient to Mays Cancer Center?

Since our center’s inception in 1974, we’ve partnered with referring physicians to provide leading care. Physicians and other health care providers throughout Central and South Texas refer their patients to us for several reasons:

  • National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation: Mays Cancer Center is the only NCI-designated cancer center in Central and South Texas, and one of just four in the state. We’ve maintained our NCI designation since 1991, which shows our decades-long commitment to groundbreaking research and exceptional patient care.
  • MD Anderson Cancer Center partnership: In 2017, Mays Cancer Center became one of only a few centers in the country to partner with MD Anderson Cancer Center. Your patients receive care from doctors who follow the same clinical practice algorithms and confer with MD Anderson doctors as needed.
  • Access to clinical trials: Our faculty and associate research members conduct more than 180 clinical trials each year, some of which are available only at Mays Cancer Center. Eligible patients have access to novel therapeutics and techniques years before they’re approved for public use.
  • Collaboration with you: Whether you’re a primary care provider or specialist, we respect your relationships with your patients. We work closely with you to understand all the details about your patient so that we can provide appropriate advice and care. After we see your patients, we promptly communicate all details with you via Epic, fax or postal mail.
  • Second opinions: We provide second opinions for many reasons, including to review a diagnosis or treatment plan, explore advanced treatment options or supply information about clinical trials. Whether your patient has suspected cancer, a new diagnosis, or recurrent or refractory disease, we offer medical advice to help you and your patient decide next steps.
  • Simple referral process: You can refer a patient via Epic, email, phone or fax. We’ll contact you for your patient’s records, and we’ll contact your patient to schedule an appointment.
